Mark, you may find interesting some of the research on "High Performance Teams" conducted by Robert C. Ginnett, Ph.D. in the 80's. A pilot and head of the Psych. Dept. at the Airforce Academy, Bob did extensive on-sight observation of flight crews on United Airlines flights and others. His conclusions, which can be found in his book, Leadership, (co-authored with Richard L. Hughes and Gordon J. Curphy) are fascinating, powerful and scary as hell, if you fly often.

You'll find it is a simple matter to apply the lessons he learned to the practice law and the work of lawyers as Bob did when he worked with us on leadership development programs for lawyers at the Center for Creative Leadership.
